Lesson 4: Addition of Whole Numbers
Addition is the process of combining two or more numbers to get a total (also called a sum).
Steps to Add
- Line up the digits by place value (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.).
- Add from right to left.
- If the sum of a column is 10 or more, carry over to the next place value.
Examples
23 + 47 = 70
152 + 348 = 500
612 + 388 = 1,000
Where You Use Addition
Addition is used when counting money, adding up scores, tracking time, measuring, and many other everyday tasks.
