Lesson 6: Multiplication of Whole Numbers
Multiplication is a quick way to add the same number over and over again. It tells you how many total items you have in equal groups.
Steps to Multiply
- Line up the digits if you're multiplying larger numbers.
- Multiply each digit in one number by each digit in the other, starting from the right.
- Add any numbers you carry over to the next place value.
Examples
6 × 7 = 42
9 × 8 = 72
12 × 5 = 60
Where You Use Multiplication
Use multiplication to figure out totals: like the number of items in rows, prices for multiple items, or how many minutes in hours.
