Some students despise math and some are in love with numbers and math in general. It doesn’t matter what side you’re on you’ll still have to deal with math in high school. You’ll have to take all the math classes available and/or reach the same levels.
But what order should they be done in? Is there a specific order in which the math classes should be taken in high school? Yes, actually, there is. We’ll go over that in this blog post.
Math Course Order in High School
Algebra I
Sometimes students may take Algebra I in middle school, but you’ll take it in 9th grade. You’ll learn about equations, functions, polynomials, and dealing with both graph and linear problems.
You will almost always take this as the first math class in the order of math courses. To learn more about what you’ll learn in Algebra I check out Khan Academy’s Algebra I Practice Courses.
Geometry
The course that follows Algebra I is Geometry. This course follows Algebra I so you can learn the basics of equations and concepts that you’ll learn earlier, so you can understand Geometry. To get more of an idea of what you’ll learn in Geometry check out Khan Academy’s Geometry Practice Courses have available.
Algebra II/Trigonometry
Included in Algebra II are functions, radical functions, rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometry, geometry, conic, section, systems of equations, probability, and statistics.
Often times Trigonometry accompanies Algebra II, and sometimes it’s in the same class. It can also be taught alongside Precalculus. To see what you’ll learn taking these two courses check out Khan Academy’s Algebra II Practice Courses and Khan Academy’s Trigonometry Practice Courses have listed.
Precalculus
Learn the basics of precalculus which is required for college or undergraduate-level studies. These will include factoring and division, sets and set operations, functions and graphs, and reasoning and proofs, and equations and inequalities. To see more about what you learn in precalculus check out Khan Academy’s Precalculus Practice Course
Calculus
Learn to translate word problems into mathematical problems, that can be solved with tools of calculus. To get more of an idea of what you’ll learn check out Khan Academy’s Calculus 1 Practice Course has available for this subject.
How many Math Classes Are Required in Alabama?
In other states, the amount required varies, but in Alabama, you’re required at least 4 Math Course Credits to graduate from high school. For a standard diploma, you would only be required to take 4 math courses to graduate.
What are some of the hardest Math Classes in High School?
For most students, this would be any math classes after Algebra I, Geometry, & Algebra II, such as Trigonometry, Precalculus, and Calculus. Now some students may have trouble with all High School Math! If that is the case be sure to use free sites like Khan Academy to get extra help and explanations if your student is struggling. Sites like that can be helpful with their repetitive quizzes and tasks.
